Chris Shays, the man who drives conservative Republicans nuts, for Central Intelligence Agency director?

That was in the Washington rumor mix Friday, along with some other names. But no one from the Bush administration has contacted the 4th District Republican about the position. Director George Tenet, who resigned last month, leaves the job Sunday.

The first thought Connecticut delegation folks had was that the rumor mill - stoked by a report in the Washington Post - meant to name Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.

But no, that wasn't right, because Simmons has thrown his support behind Rep. Porter J. Goss, R-Fla., and Friday was not backing off. Goss, considered in some quarters the favorite for the job, is also a CIA veteran.

So why Shays?

He has the resume. A nine-term veteran, he heads the House's national security, emerging threats and international relations subcommittee, and held hearings on terrorist threats long before Sept. 11. He knows the players, knows the issues and for all his maverick views has been a consistent supporter of the administration's anti-terrorism efforts.

Just one problem: No one's contacted Shays, and he's not seeking the job.

But if asked, he's telling people, he'd of course consider it.

RPCV Chris Shays to be named CIA Director? RPCV Chris Shays to be named CIA Director?
The Washington Post is reporting that Fiji RPCV and Congressman Chris Shays is on Bush's short list to run the Central Intelligence Agency. "The likelihood of their choosing me, I think, is fairly remote," Shays said but added that he would consider the job if it were offered. Meanwhile Shays is in a competitive race for his seat in Connecticut. Read more about Chris Shays. What do you think?
