'American Dream' shines at both party conventions

Cut through the expected partisan rhetoric at the Republican and Democratic national conventions and you'll find many points of agreement -- particularly on the issue of America as the land of opportunity.

High-profile immigrants and one son of an immigrant took center stage at both conventions. They spoke of the "American Dream" and the role the United States has played in bettering the lives of others.

Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, was born in the African country of Mozambique and grew up there while it was a dictatorship.

"I have a very personal feeling about how special America is, and I know how precious freedom is," she told convention attendees.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, addressing the Republican National Convention, spoke of the fear he experienced as a young boy when his uncle's car was stopped at a military checkpoint when the Soviets occupied part of Austria.

Both Schwarzenegger and Heinz Kerry mentioned the work of the Peace Corps in helping people of other nations and spreading American optimism.

Schwarzenegger also talked about opportunity: "To think that a once scrawny boy from Austria could grow up to become governor of California and stand in Madison Square Garden to speak on behalf of the president of the United States, that is an immigrant's dream."

Similar words were spoken by Barack Obama, the Democrats' keynote speaker.

The son of an African goat herder, the U.S. Senate candidate from Illinois described himself as "a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too."

Although they might not have shared the spotlight, undoubtedly there were many immigrants-turned-proud-Americans among the delegates at both conventions, nodding their heads in agreement with the words of Heinz Kerry, Schwarzenegger and Obama.

Freedom. Hope. Opportunity.

These are benefits of living in America that are too often forgotten or taken for granted. The speakers at both conventions provided strong reminders to immigrants and those of us born in the USA how good we have it here.

Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention
Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
