Governor appoints former Clinton official to head charity

LOS ANGELES – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that Henry Cisneros, a former housing secretary in the Clinton administration, will serve as national chairman of his charity that supports after-school programs.

"Providing after-school programs for all children by the year 2010 continues to be one of my most important priorities," the governor said in a statement. "I am very grateful that Henry Cisneros has agreed to serve as chairman."

Schwarzenegger has promoted after-school programs for years, and his After-School All-Stars pays for sports and educational programs for poor and minority children in 15 cities. Its major financial sponsors include Hummer and the Todd Wagner Foundation. Cisneros' position as chairman is unpaid.

Cisneros, chairman of American City Vista and Pacific City Homes, served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1997. After leaving the Clinton White House, he became president of the Spanish language television network Univision.

Cisneros also was among leading Democrats last year who honored Schwarzenegger's father-in-law, Sargent Shriver, at a dinner in Beverly Hills. More recently, he has been campaigning on behalf of fellow Democrat John Kerry.

Once considered a rising political star, Cisneros saw his fortunes slip after admitting during a background check for his cabinet position that he lied about payments he had made to a former mistress.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
