Celebrating Sarge Shriver

In what seemed like a Great Society Alumni Association meeting, a group of public servants past and present gathered at the Bunn Center at Georgetown University on Tuesday evening to pay tribute to Sargent Shriver, who seemingly had a hand in every one of LBJ’s programs.

Hampered by Alzheimer’s disease, Shriver — whose son-in-law happens to be governor of California — left the speaking to his biographer, Scott Stossel, as well as Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne and Georgetown Law professor and former RFK aide Peter Edelman.

But he did pipe up when the topic turned to baseball. Stossel was questioning whether his status as an adopted Red Sox fan trumped his hometown allegiance to either the Cubs or the White Sox. “All three,” shouted Shriver, prompting Dionne to quip, “You did run for president.”

The 200-strong audience included Shriver’s son Tim, former Sen. Harris Wofford (D-Pa.) and USA Freedom Corps Director John Bridgeland.

Many speakers underscored the deep division that still exists between Reaganites and acolytes of LBJ. Attempting to take a slap at Reagan, the irony was apparently lost on Edelman when he said it’s “unconscionable” that we still have 35 million people in poverty, only seconds after he asked rhetorically, “If it’s such a failure, how come we’re still doing all these things?”

A good question.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
