On Tuesday November 16th from 5:30-7:30pm the Shriver Center at UMBC proudly presents:
Scott Stossel, author of Sarge: The Life and Times of Sargent Shriver.
Mr. Stossel is senior editor at the Atlantic Monthly and we are pleased to have him join us to speak about his long awaited biography of Shriver, the founding father and first director of the Peace Corps. Shriver is one of the truly great Americans of the 20th century. During the Kennedy and Johnson administrations he was the backbone of the New Frontier, envisioning and implementing numerous programs that have since become household names: The Peace Corps, VISTA, Head Start, Legal Services for the Poor.to name just a few. Married into the Kennedy family, he and his wife Eunice Kennedy Shriver began Special Olympics in the yard of their Rockville MD home and have developed it into an international organization involving more than a million people from over 150 countries. Shriver's local connections to Maryland run deep. For more than two centuries his family has been influential in state politicsthey founded Maryland's Democratic Party!and Maryland catholic historya young Sarge served the last mass of Baltimore's Cardinal James Gibbons!
