New National Effort for Kerry-Edwards by Former Peace Corps Volunteers Press Conference scheduled to announce support ________________________________________________________________________

Wednesday, October 6, 2004 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Lisagor Room National Press Club

529 14th Street, NW Washington, DC

(October 4, 2004) A group of returned Peace Corps volunteers and staff have scheduled a press conference in Washington DC to announce their support for the Kerry-Edwards ticket. The group, which now numbers nearly one thousand and growing, is concerned that the current administration’s approach to foreign policy has been far too reliant on military approaches to national security and downplayed the role of diplomacy, foreign aid and direct citizen-to-citizen efforts such as the Peace Corps.

The press conference will feature remarks by leading members of the Peace Corps community whose expertise on foreign policy and environmental issues demonstrate why they believe that a Kerry-Edwards Administration will better address the challenges the developing world faces. Returned volunteers and staff from all walks of life will be present to discuss how this group will mobilize support from the Peace Corps community.

Speakers include:

§ The Honorable David Magnani, State Senator, MA (emcee)

§ The Honorable Robert Pastor

§ Paul Oostburg San

z§ Mike Tidwell

Statement of Support for John Kerry and John Edwards

By Returned Peace Corps Alumni

We joined the Peace Corps because we were committed to the idea that Americans could partner with people of different nations, cultures, religions and political philosophies to address world wide problems of poverty, ignorance, disease and underdevelopment. We learned much about the cultures and countries and in which we served and formed lasting friendships around the world.

As returned Peace Corps volunteers and staff members, we are profoundly concerned by the greatly diminished respect and trust for the US in our countries of service and elsewhere. This loss has been the consequence of policies and attitudes of the Bush-Cheney Administration that have squandered the universal good will for Americans after 9/11. They have alienated the populations of our traditional allies and created fear and distrust of the USA in countless other nations.

The insularity, lack of cross-cultural understanding and recklessness of this Administration has been demonstrated most tragically by an internationally unsanctioned and ill conceived war in Iraq. It has also been seen in their abrogation of previously negotiated global agreements to control climate change, to hold gross violators of human rights legally accountable before an international tribunal and to stop nuclear testing and proliferation.

This is the most important election in our lifetimes. It can decisively shape the relationship between the US and the world and thus the security and prosperity of our own nation and the well being of the people with whom we worked in the Peace Corps.

We support the election of John Kerry as President and John Edwards as Vice President because they offer an opportunity to bring a more peaceful solution in Iraq, to reestablish mutual respect in our international relations and to more effectively combat terrorism by addressing its causes as well as its manifestations.
