Sarge: The Life and Times of Sargent Shriver
Tuesday November 16th from 5:30-7:30pm
Albin O Kuhn Library Gallery at UMBC
Mr. Stossel, senior editor at the Atlantic Monthly, will join us to speak about his much-anticipated biography of Sargent Shriver, the founder and first director of the Peace Corps.
Sargent Shriver is one of the great Americans of the 20th century. For decades he has effectively combined an idealism about social progress with the political pragmatism to get things done. During the Kennedy and Johnson administrations he was the backbone of the New Frontier, envisioning and implementing programs that have since become household names: The Peace Corps, VISTA, Head Start, Legal Services for the Poor…to name just a few. Married into the Kennedy family, he and Eunice Kennedy Shriver began Special Olympics in the yard of their Maryland home and have since developed it into an international organization involving more than a million people from over 150 countries.
Refreshments will follow Mr. Stossel’s presentation during which there will be opportunities for booksigning.
The event will be held at UMBC’s Albin O Kuhn Library in the Gallery on the 1st floor. For directions to the campus and to find the library visit: www.umbc.edu and click “map.” Parking for the event will be marked.
Smithsonian Press is graciously providing copies of Sarge at the cost of $15 copy for the hardback (a 55% discount). To receive a copy in advance of the event contact Joby Taylor.
Mr. Stossel will appear earlier in the day on the Mark Steiner show. Tune in to Baltimore’s WYPR 88.1 FM, from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
