McCullough, Putnam, Alexander, Billington, Hickok & Cox Meet to Examine Citizenship
WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough, "Bowling Alone" author Robert Putnam, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, Librarian of Congress James Billington, Deputy Secretary of Education Eugene Hickok, and Corporation for Public Broadcasting President Kathleen Cox will join more than 500 educators and civics leaders for an all- day conference Friday, December 3, to discuss U.S. citizenship in a post-9/11 world. The annual conference of the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) will be held at the Ronald W. Reagan Building in Washington from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. National Conference on Citizenship Board Chairman Craig Turk and Civic Enterprises President & CEO John Bridgeland will host the event.
The complete agenda including speakers and times can be found at http://www.ncoc.net.
News announcements are expected from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Conference on Citizenship. Both are leading members of a new national network devoted to strengthening the teaching of American history and civics education, increasing political and civic engagement, and evaluating progress on future efforts to strengthen the civic health of the nation.
"The purpose of this conference is threefold," said Bridgeland, former Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps. "We will provide a forum for leaders to renew the national effort to strengthen citizenship -- through American history and civics education, community and national service, and political and civic engagement. We will identify the missions, goals and results of leading organizations working in these areas. And we will provide a platform for the announcement of new initiatives from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Conference on Citizenship and others to provide momentum to these important efforts."
The NCoC is a federally chartered corporation whose mission is to encourage a more active, engaged citizenry. Founded in 1946 to sustain the spirit of cooperation that bound citizens together during World War II, the NCoC was granted a federal charter by a unanimous act of the Congress in 1953. The NCoC was instrumental in pushing for the annual observance of Citizenship Day on September 17. The NCoC is a non-profit, non-partisan organization.
