Programs encourage civic involvement
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Two new efforts are afoot to encourage Americans to volunteer, vote, voice their opinions and otherwise uphold their civic duty.
The fledgling programs, intended to promote civic education and nudge citizens off the nation's sidelines, were announced Friday by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by the National Conference on Citizenship, which is holding its annual meeting.
John Bridgeland, senior adviser to the citizenship conference, envisions "a unified nation of doers, givers and joiners."
The 9-11 attacks shocked many people into civic participation, and the question is how to sustain that spirit, Bridgeland said. He is encouraged by increased turnout in the Nov. 2 election, he said, but is worried that lingering political divisions could dampen engagement.
The conference is creating a National Center on Citizenship intended to help those who work to boost civic involvement -- teachers, members of community groups and foundations, and others -- to share their successes and apply for federal grants. A National Advisory Board will work to come up with better ways to measure civic engagement. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting's initiative will help teach American history and civics to middle and high school students.

| Is Gaddi Leaving? Rumors are swirling that Peace Corps Director Vasquez may be leaving the administration. We think Director Vasquez has been doing a good job and if he decides to stay to the end of the administration, he could possibly have the same sort of impact as a Loret Ruppe Miller. If Vasquez has decided to leave, then Bob Taft, Peter McPherson, Chris Shays, or Jody Olsen would be good candidates to run the agency. Latest: For the record, Peace Corps has no comment on the rumors. |
| The Birth of the Peace Corps UMBC's Shriver Center and the Maryland Returned Volunteers hosted Scott Stossel, biographer of Sargent Shriver, who spoke on the Birth of the Peace Corps.
