'Mean Well, Speak Well, Do Well'
On Friday, Dec. 3, students at the Glen Urquhart School (GUS) in Beverly Farms explored the school's motto, "Mean Well, Speak Well, Do Well," in workshops and presentations at the school's Second Biannual Diversity Conference.
The conference teaches students about the causes and conditions of poverty locally, nationally and globally. Through interactive workshops students learned how to carry out the GUS mission, "To respect all people and value their differences. To act responsibly in our community and in the world."
Students attended a series of workshops including some as varied as: "Sympathy is No Substitute for Action," with Peace Corps veteran James Herman and self-proclaimed activist Pamela Young who described their efforts to work for social justice here and abroad; "Power to the People," led by GUS parents Pat Baker and Noreen Kelly, described feeding programs in the state, and explained how students can make a contribution by becoming involved citizens; "Blue Cross Blue Shield Blues," with GUS parent Dr. Brian Orr, who described stories of providing health care to homeless teens and discussed how poverty affects a person's ability to live a healthy life and obtain health care.
Other workshops included: "One Cannot Live By Bread Alone," led by GUS parent Bernadette Orr, who described the problems of world hunger with Orr sharing stories of her work with Oxfam; and "The Mystery of The Disappearing Homes," with Therese Sellers, who led an interactive mystery where students discovered some of the many causes of homelessness in a fictitious town called Pleasantville.
The Glen Urquhart School is located at 74 Hart Street, Beverly Farms. For more information, contact the school by calling 978-927- 1064.
