The Orange County Register today published a letter to the editor from John H. Taylor, Nixon Foundation executive director, complaining about an article that left readers with the impression that former county supervisor Gaddi Vasquez -- President Bush's appointee for Director of the Peace Corps -- had been severely criticized by President Nixon's Peace Corps director.
Republican Vasquez, a former Orange County supervisor, was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Nixon Library.
Here's the text of Taylor's letter:
Wrong man in the job
Dena Bunis' article, "Vasquez defends role in O.C. bankruptcy" [Nation & World, Nov. 15], leaves readers with the erroneous impression that Jack Hood Vaughn, who strongly criticized Republican Gaddi Vasquez during Vasquez's hearings to be Peace Corps director, was President Nixon's choice for that job.
In fact, Vaughn was appointed in 1966 by President Johnson and left the post early in the Nixon administration. President Nixon's choice for Peace Corps director was Joe Blatchford.

| Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
