Forty-one teachers, school administrators, university professors, and Peace Corps Volunteers from Russia, Kazakhstan and Moldova met in Azov, Russia, for a GLOBE International Train-the-Trainer Workshop. Azov is nestled along the Don River near the Sea of Azov, and was founded in 1067 AD.
The workshop was taught mainly in Russian, and was the first workshop hosted by Dr. Feodor Surkov, the National Country Coordinator for Russia. Dr. Surkov, a professor at Rostov State University, is building a network of qualified trainers, first in the Rostov area and then throughout Russia. "To build a strong and sustainable GLOBE Program in Russia, we need to have experienced GLOBE trainers all around Russia to provide support to GLOBE schools. After all, Russia is a big country," said Dr. Surkov. The workshop was led by the following trainers in the Rostov region: Feodor Surkov, Natasha Lihktanskaya, Natalia Petkova, and Olga Zhilevich.
students with clinometer Olga Zhilevich, a hydrology trainer, has been working with Dr. Surkov for a number of years on joint American and Russian school exchange programs for ecological studies. "GLOBE not only provides students an understanding of the local environment, but allows students to learn about other cultures and develop life-long friendships," said Ms. Zhilevich.
The workshop provided opportunities for the participants from all three countries to share experiences, suggest implementation strategies, and develop collaborative school projects.
The participants' spirits were high at the graduation ceremony. Their hard work and dedication to teaching was recognized by a number of officials: Kovalev Leonid Feodorovich, Minister of Education of Rostov Region, Lukyanov Alexander Vladimirovich, Vice Mayor of Azov City, Krupenya Eugeniy Yurievich, Head of Educational Department of Azov City and Melissa Sanderson from the US Embassy in Moscow
