Welcome to Peace Corps Ecuador
Welcome! My name is Lauren Miller, and I am currently a volunteer with Peace Corps' Youth and Families program in Ecuador. I am hoping to use this site to help Middlebury students learn more about life in the Peace Corps, life in a developing country and development in general. I look forward to commentary, from questions about Peace Corps to additions from people who are interested and/or have been involved in international service or development projects. Any and all feedback is encouraged (Timi...).
I am currently in a training period which all Peace Corps volunteers go through in Tabacundo, Ecuador, which is about an hour and a half north of Quito. During these 3 months, we 1-work to improve our Spanish, 2-learn about pertinent issues in Ecuador such as family planning, HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, and gender roles, 3- learn about peace corps and other programs that have been successful such as "Como Planear Mi Vida", a series of workshops geared at helping teenagers think about education, relationships, goal setting, and jobs, 4- receive training in small business, and 5- learn about all safety practices and development goals for Peace Corps. Needless to say, we stay quite busy...
I am living with a host family for these three months, and will continue to live with a host family during my two years here. My family consists of a single mom and her two sons, Gabriel and Carlitos. Not only do I crack up watching my host brothers dance and sing, but they have taught me games and phrases in Spanish that I never otherwise would have learned. Living with a family has been a great experience.
We swear in as volunteers this September 22, at which point we will leave for our sites for a two year period. Through the next two years, I will try to provide a weekly update through this webpage. If anyone has any questoins, feel free to contact me at lmiller, middlebury.edu. If for the life of me I could only figure out how to get the at mark to work..
