Pope changed Crowley's life to relief work
By Gregory Korte
Enquirer staff writer
Pope John Paul II will likely be known as a conservative force in the history of the church.
Cincinnati Councilman David C. Crowley, on the other hand,is an unabashed liberal in all matters political and religious. Crowley is pro-choice, divorced and remarried, supports gay marriage and favors allowing women into the priesthood.
And yet it's possible that the late pontiff is at least somewhat responsible for getting Crowley elected to City Council in 2001.
The story begins in 1982, when Crowley - then the vice president of the American Association of Homes for the Aging - attended a Vatican seminar connected to the United Nations World Assembly on Aging. The seminar was held at the pope's summer villa at Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome, and the pope celebrated Mass for those in attendance.
"Just the act of taking Holy Communion is an elevation of your soul and your body," Crowley remembered recently. "But to take it from the pope, it added to the whole spirit. I really felt uplifted."
Crowley credits that meeting with sparking a career change that led him into international work and, eventually, politics. He quit his job, went to graduate school and took a job with the Peace Corps in the Caribbean. He later led United Nations relief efforts in Bosnia and came home to run for City Council in 2001.
That year, Crowley campaigned as a voice of experience on a Democratic ticket that included candidates such as Laketa Cole, John Cranley, David Pepper and Alicia Reece, all in their 20s.To buttress that message, his campaign ad featuring a photo of Crowley shaking hands with the pope.
Crowley can't say whether that photo helped him win over German-Irish Catholic voters who make up a significant proportion of the West Side vote.
But after a disappointing ninth-place finish in 2003, the Crowley campaign had planned to bring back the John Paul photo in its 2005 television blitz.
"It was mentioned before he became ill," said campaign manager Chris Seelbach.
