MADISON, Wis. -- As millions crowd Rome for a final glimpse of Pope John Paul II before he is laid to rest Friday, his death is raising questions of separation of church and state in Wisconsin.
To honor the pope, Gov. Jim Doyle has ordered all flags on public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff until Friday night. That's not sitting well a Madison group, the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
The group said the governor's order appears to endorse Roman Catholicism over other religious viewpoints.
"The pope was the world's leading sexist," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Foundation. "Why should Wisconsin women be expected to revere his anti-woman, antediluvian teachings?" ( Read Full Statements )
Doyle, who grew up Catholic, said in his executive order, the Pope "was not only an inspirational spiritual leader, but also made a significant impact on social justice issues and was a champion of peace." ( Read Executive Order )
President George W. Bush issued a similar order on Saturday.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
