U.S. representative 'seriously' explores bid to replace Sarbanes

U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen said today that he raised more than $300,000 during the last three weeks of March while exploring a bid to replace outgoing U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes.
Since Jan. 1, the Democratic congressman has raised a total of $338,000, including the money in March. He says he has $713,000 in total available funds.
Van Hollen and Rep. Benjamin Cardin, another Democrat, are considering a run for Senate. On Wednesday, Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, who had been considering a bid, announced that he would stay in Congress.
Kweisi Mfume, a former five-term congressman and president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and activist A. Robert Kaufman have declared their intention to seek the Democratic nomination.
"In the wake of Sen. Sarbanes' decision not to seek re-election, many people have encouraged me to run for the U.S. Senate," Van Hollen said in a statement. "I very much appreciate all of the support I have received as I seriously explore that possibility."
Mike Morrill, who managed Sen. Barbara Mikulski's re-election campaign last year and who now heads Van Hollen's exploratory effort, said the money is "a striking measure of the depth of support the congressman enjoys" and demonstrates "that he will be a strong, dynamic candidate if he chooses to run for the United States Senate."

And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
