Taffy does wonders as hair remover

The things kids will do for a piece of Laffy Taffy . . . .

Andrew Ensz told students at Westside Middle School that he would cut his hair at a school assembly if they raised $1,000 for the Nebraska AIDS Project.

Andrew's big, curly hair was famous at Westside, where he works as a technical aide. The kids knew him as Afro Guy. (And, occasionally, Sideshow Bob.)

The hair had to go. Andrew and his wife are going to Armenia with the Peace Corps next month. Short hair is mandatory.

Andrew wanted to get as much good out of this haircut as possible. If the kids at Westside came anywhere close to $1,000, he still would have rewarded them.

They didn't come close. In the spirit of Andrew's 'fro, Westside students went way over the top. The final tally was $1,700.

Much of that money was raised one day at lunch. Andrew offered candy to the table in each section of the cafeteria that donated the most money. Bidding wars ensued. "A couple of pieces of Laffy Taffy go a long way."

The 'fro finally fell Tuesday at a school assembly. Eight students got to wield scissors.

The results weren't pretty. Andrew had to have his wife cut his hair even shorter before he could go on with the school day.

"It was going to be a distraction . . . I looked like Bert from Bert and Ernie."

It's taken him a few days to feel like himself again. His head is cold, and he keeps feeling phantom hair fall in his face. The kids till tease him.

"Some kids say I look like Adam Sandler now."

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
