"I'm always fascinated by women of courage," first lady of California Maria Shriver said at a sold-out gathering of 650 at Women of Vision's "Faces of Courage" luncheon Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club Resort.

"My dad, Sargent Shriver, gave a speech several years ago to the graduating class of Yale, which had great impact," she continued. "He said, 'Smash the mirrors that block your view. In our society that is so self-absorbed, you need to look less at yourself and more at each other. You'll get more satisfaction from having improved your neighborhood, your town, your state, your country and your fellow human beings than you'll ever get from your car, your house or your credit rating.' I truly believe that message is the best gift we can give ourselves and our children," Shriver said.

Women of Vision was founded in Orange County in 1990 as a volunteer ministry of World Vision. The partnership of Christian women is dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide tackle causes of poverty and reach their full potential.

The $300,000 net proceeds will benefit projects for the local chapter in Costa Mesa as well as Baja California, Los Angeles, Kenya, Peru, Jerusalem/West Bank/Gaza Strip, and Azerbaijan. Shriver's mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, attended and said, "Maria was very excited to be here today and address women who care about the children in Bosnia, women who because of their humanity are willing to make a difference."

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
