Buck stops where?
I was in the Peace Corps, not the armed forces, but I've always understood that when mistakes are made in the Army, "the buck" stops not on the doorstep of the enlisted man or woman, but on the doorstep of the superior officers -- up to and including the secretary of defense and the commander in chief. A good officer, in my perhaps romanticized view, didn't shirk responsibility.
I feel the buck should have come to rest on the desks of Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush, and that to call Lynndie England a "key Abu Ghraib figure" is a misnomer. She was the "key Abu Ghraib pawn."
I believe the White House and the Department of Defense are the "key figures" of this disgraceful chapter in American history. If we didn't have people on the White House staff justifying torture in position papers and memos, the abuse of Abu Ghraib would have been far less likely to occur.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
