GENEVA — Four local volunteers and community activists who share their light with others will receive award candles from Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes at a dinner June 7.
[Excerpt]
Mark Gearan, president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges; Gene McFadden of Geneva, long active at the Center of Concern; and Donald and Corrine Stork, a Penn Yan couple who have been involved in many community issues and organizations, will be honored with the 12th annual Sharing the Light Award Dinner at Club 86.
“We should honor people who have done good works in the community, who have shared their talents and their time and have given an example by their deeds,” said Tim Buckley, a Geneva attorney who serves on the Catholic Charities’ board and helped organize the event.
Gearan, who headed the Peace Corps before becoming HWS president, has actively supported Celebrate Service- Celebrate Geneva, a community service project run by the colleges.
“Making [service] an important part of what we do has been a particular interest of mine,” Gearan said.
He said he was especially touched to receive the award in light of the good work done by previous honorees. But he also praised his students and others who make the Colleges’ community volunteer programs work.
“In many ways, I’m just the standard-bearer for many behind me who share in this award,” he said. “We like to think that we prepare students here to lead and serve in the 21st century, and it starts right here in Geneva.”

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
