The Ackerman Juggernaut??? Say what?

While I would hardly put Ackerman and Juggernaut in the same sentence, nevertheless OC political guru J. Fleischman has put out the latest info on the 48th CD battle

ACKERMAN JUGGERNAUTENDORSEMENTS SOLIDIFY LEAD, ROGAN OUTPresident George W. Bush yesterday nominated conservative California Congressman Christopher Cox to be Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, setting the stage for a special election to take place in the 48th Congressional District, a crown jewel of GOP seats in Orange County.Yesterday, I brought you my first analysis of this race. Look for ongoing review of this race as things progress... Any newspaper articles on this race will be featured in the FlashReport (such as the ones below).

To read yesterday's analysis, find it posted on the Sacramento Bee website (thanks to columnist/blogger Dan Weintraub) at www.sacbee.com/insider.ACKERMAN SOLIDIFIES FRONT-RUNNER STATUS

State Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman was definitely serious yesterday morning when he told me he was definitely running for Congress. There are a large number of potential candidates for this seat, but as of right now, only Ackerman and Marilyn Brewer, a liberal-moderate former "GOP" Assemblywoman, are telling people they are running. Since rumors of the Cox nomination to the SEC were confirmed, Ackerman has been on overdrive, pulling together endorsements (see below), and engaging a wide finance network, understanding his need to quickly show that he can raise big bucks!

JIM ROGAN - NOT LIKELY TO RUN
While I have not spoken personally to Rogan, I have now spoken to three people that have. He has been characterized as "95% unlikely to run" by folks. His issues? He doesn't LIVE in the district, and he thinks he should. He likes the big $$ from the Venable law firm. He also is a fan of Ackerman. Rogan remains a huge wildcard due to is national superstar status. He has a compelling story to tell, and would be able to raise the finances to tell it. Given how conservative he is, I am sure every one of Brewer's friends is encouraging him to run...

OTHER POTENTIAL CANDIDATES:Other potential candidates, at this point, include attorney/longtime GOP activist Kurt English, and former Congressman Bob Dornan. On the former, good guy (despite the USC pedigree) but I predict he is not one to split the conservative vote if it boils down to an Ackerman/Brewer battle. On the latter, I want to remind everyone that the always bombastic but ever conservative Dornan, not too long ago, "moved back" to Orange County (he lives in Virginia) and mounted a primary challenge to Dana Rohrabacher that was an embarrassment. As much as I loved Bob's energy and enthusiasm when he was a Congressman, that whole process of him challenging Dana let me to conclude that "B-1" is either going nuts or is consumed by his ego. Probably a lot of both. Still, his presence in a race like this would be a factor to consider. Can he win? Unlikely. But would he eat into Ackerman's base? You bet. I should also add that I have heard that a number of folks are urging former OC Supervisor Gaddi Vasquez, now Director of the Peace Corps, to "come home" and throw his hat in the ring. Of course, this is also a district where thousands of residents are one mortgage away from self-funding.I was able to speak or e-mail with some candidates, speak with operatives and reporters, and a brief talk with Dick Ackerman yesterday afternoon. All of these things have given me the following intel to share with you on endorsements:

Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong Date: April 2 2005 No: 543 Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong
170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
