RPCV Randy Brown helps Niger fund raises nearly $10,000
Randy Brown, a U-32 physics teacher and an organizer of the project, says the first $5,000 of money was wired to an American ministry in Niger a few weeks ago and a second allotment of over $3,500 was scheduled to be sent out this past Saturday. The money is slated to help families in Niger who struggle through an annual hunger season, a roughly three-month period during which food supplies run low and new crops aren't ready for harvest

EAST MONTPELIER – While Katrina's disaster is in all the headlines, organizers for the Old Meeting House Niger Hunger Project say they're still raising funds for a disaster far away. Their fund drive resulted in close to $10,000 being raised to help the hungry in the West African nation, but more donations are needed.
Randy Brown, a U-32 physics teacher and an organizer of the project, says the first $5,000 of money was wired to an American ministry in Niger a few weeks ago and a second allotment of over $3,500 was scheduled to be sent out this past Saturday. The money is slated to help families in Niger who struggle through an annual hunger season, a roughly three-month period during which food supplies run low and new crops aren't ready for harvest. This year's hunger season was exacerbated due to locust infestations and drought, leaving much of the nation's population in famine conditions. Brown, who served there in the Peace Corps, said the hunger season typically ends when the new harvest comes in, sometime around Sept. 15. Contributions to help the famine there can still be sent to: Old Meeting House – Niger Hunger Project 1300 Center Rd., Montpelier, VT 05602.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
