Congressman John Kline says: I have also introduced legislation to respond to the concerns of Peace Corps volunteers
I have also introduced legislation (with the support of fellow Minnesotan Rep. Betty McCollum) to respond to the concerns of Peace Corps volunteers that perceived links between their service and the U.S. military could jeopardize their safety.

Despite many legislative successes throughout the year, on Sept. 17 the Star Tribune chose to devote front-page coverage to legislation I introduced more than seven months ago (on the occasion of Ronald Reagan's birthday in February) while failing to mention when it was introduced.
A Sept. 20 letter writer ("Kline's priorities") may have been left with an incomplete and inaccurate impression of my legislative priorities.
I have undertaken numerous important initiatives in the months since February. For example, as vice chairman of the subcommittee responsible for drafting our nation's pension laws, I have been instrumental in crafting and helping to pass legislation that will protect the retirement security of workers and retirees.
I have made personal calls to Treasury Secretary John Snow and the White House on behalf of those workers affected by the decision of Northwest Airlines to declare bankruptcy.
I have also introduced legislation (with the support of fellow Minnesotan Rep. Betty McCollum) to respond to the concerns of Peace Corps volunteers that perceived links between their service and the U.S. military could jeopardize their safety.
Rep. John Kline, Washington, D.C.

| Why blurring the lines puts PCVs in danger When the National Call to Service legislation was amended to include Peace Corps in December of 2002, this country had not yet invaded Iraq and was not in prolonged military engagement in the Middle East, as it is now. Read the story of how one volunteer spent three years in captivity from 1976 to 1980 as the hostage of a insurrection group in Colombia in Joanne Marie Roll's op-ed on why this legislation may put soldier/PCVs in the same kind of danger. |
| The Peace Corps Library Peace Corps Online is proud to announce that the Peace Corps Library is now available online. With over 30,000 index entries in 500 categories, this is the largest collection of Peace Corps related stories in the world. From Acting to Zucchini, you can find hundreds of stories about what RPCVs with your same interests or from your Country of Service are doing today. | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
