I read a similar article by McCarthy in the NCR and wrote a letter which I never mailed.-Darn.
Mr. McCarthy for all his peace credentials just doesn't get it when it comes to the goals of the Peace Corps. He thought getting the bridge built was the goal in his example, not enabling local people to figure out how to solve their problem. The Zambia story about the watertower incident is a good example of how rumors and suspicion swirl around any visible actions of volunteers. Insert people who are still in the U.S. military and the danger and volatility would be extreme. And, lastly, why spoil a good thing?
