Two local police officials returned last week from a trip to the South Pacific island of Tonga to learn about its culture. Cpl. Mark Phillips of San Bruno and Sgt. Ed Nakiso of Burlingame traveled with Emile Hons, the general manager of the Shops at Tanforan, who lived in Tonga while with the Peace Corps. Emile Hons was an art teacher in Tonga in 1976 when Dennis Priven, a friend and fellow Peace Corps volunteer, carried out the brutal murder of Deborah Gardner

A graduate of Indiana University and former Peace Corps leader in Bulgaria, the tall, fair-haired 26-year-old is an inspiration.

For Sierra Leone RPCV Alrick Brown, 28, one of the show's four students, going to film school wasn't just a shot at the big time but a way to save his life. Brown's film, "The Adventures of Supernigger," is an allegory about the 1999 shooting death of Amadou Diallo, the unarmed West African immigrant who was shot 41 times by New York Police Department officers.
