He was the first director of the Peace Corps. He masterminded programs such as Head Start, Job Corps, and Neighborhood Health Services. He convinced John F. Kennedy to make a phone call to Coretta Scott King, while her husband was locked in a Birmingham jail
And now, his daughter doesn't want Robert Sargent Shriver's work to be forgotten. "American Idealist," a documentary about Shriver and his commitment to service, will air on PBS tonight at 9 p.m.
"My father was never worried about his legacy, but as a daughter, I was," Maria Shriver said in a conference call with reporters. She was the executive producer on the documentary.

"They are the kind of television that touch people's souls," she said about documentaries.
Her father, now 92 and battling Alzheimer's, created programs such as VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), Community Action and Foster Grandparents. He also served as Special Assistant to President Johnson and Ambassador to France.
"He conducted his politics from his heart and his gut," Shriver said.
The documentary, directed and produced by Bruce Orenstein, founder and executive director of the Chicago Video Project, looks at the elder Shriver's work through the eyes of Bill Moyers, Coretta Scott King, Peace Corps volunteers and historians. "People walk away from this film inspired," Shriver said.
She said the documentary is going to be given to college and high schools for educational purposes, and she would like to see it played in every state. Shriver also hopes that the timing of the release of "American Idealist" during the presidential campaign will get candidates thinking.
"This is an issue I hope presidential candidates will talk about -- service," she said.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
| What is the greatest threat facing us now? "People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing? I would approach this differently, in almost Marshall-like terms. What are the great opportunities out there - ones that we can take advantage of?" Read more. |
