McCain says there should have been a national push for joining the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations after 911
After the September 2001 terrorist attacks, McCain said Saturday there should have been a national push for joining the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations. His comments seemed an indirect criticism of President Bush, who had urged tax cuts and more shopping to stimulate the economy at the time. Senator John McCain of Arizona is a strong supporter of expanding the Peace Corps.

McCain calls for greater volunteerism, sacrifice
By CHARLES BABINGTON – 1 day ago
LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain says the nation's greatest moral shortcoming is its failure to "devote ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests."
After the September 2001 terrorist attacks, McCain said Saturday there should have been a national push for joining the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations. His comments seemed an indirect criticism of President Bush, who had urged tax cuts and more shopping to stimulate the economy at the time.
McCain's Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, said America's greatest moral failure is its insufficient help to the disadvantaged, especially victims of racism, sexism and poverty.
The comments came in a forum on faith in which the two men appeared separately.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
