Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter to Throw Ceremonial First Pitch
WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 12, 2008 – It’s Peace Corps Night at Nationals Park! Before the Washington Nationals play the New York Mets on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and agency staff will participate in a pre-game ceremony and a Parade of Nations, featuring flags from all 74 current Peace Corps-served countries. Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter will throw the ceremonial first pitch.
The Peace Corps is celebrating a 47-year legacy of service at home and abroad. Currently, there are 8,000 Volunteers abroad, a 37-year high for Volunteers in the field. Since 1961, more than 190,000 Volunteers have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of the 139 countries where Volunteers have served. Peace Corps Volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment. | Peace Corps Suspends Program in Bolivia Turmoil began in Bolivia three weeks ago sparked by President Evo Morales' pledge to redistribute wealth from the east to the country's poorer highlands. Peace Corps has withdrawn all volunteers from the country because of "growing instability." Morales has thrown out US Ambassador Philip Goldberg accusing the American government of inciting the violence. This is not the first controversy surrounding Goldberg's tenure as US ambassador to Bolivia. |
