Emily Levitan, University of Georgia campus recruiter for the Peace Corps, threw a party as a way to bring together prospective applicants and those who have already volunteered
"My advice to anyone who is interested in the Peace Corps is to throw out all your expectations because once you get there, it will be completely different," White, a second-year graduate student from Haven, Kan., said. "You have to go into it with a completely open mind." Looking back, White said he would definitely do it all again but would have rather waited until after he retired and had a spouse. Kim and Pellicane said they are prepared for whatever obstacles they must overcome, even those posed by the Peace Corps itself. "We have been talking about going together, but the Peace Corps said we had to get married to do that," Kim said. "That was a shocker."

Former Peace Corps volunteers Joel White (left), a second-year graduate student in public administration, and Adam Barash, a social studies teacher in Hall County, talk at a gathering for current and prospective Peace Corps members at Little Kings Bar Friday.
Placed on a small table on the outdoor patio of Little Kings Shuffle Club is a diverse presentation of food: sesame noodles, couscous salad, California tuna salad, hummus and brownies.
The food is for a collection of people equally as diverse but connected through one common factor - the Peace Corps.
Emily Levitan, a second-year graduate student and campus recruiter for the Peace Corps, said she threw the party Friday night as a way to bring together prospective applicants and those who have already volunteered. Levitan contacted The Red & Black about the event.
"Everybody has an idea of what the Peace Corps is," Levitan, from Highland Park, Ill., said. "But when people go abroad, it's an amazing and trying experience. You unravel that idea of American culture that is so ingrained in our lives."
University students Christian Kim and Christina Pellicane both said they are interested in volunteering because something is lacking from their lives in Athens. The couple said by getting outside their comfort zones, they will learn more about themselves.
"Athens is a cookie-cutter bubble," said Kim, a junior from Alpharetta. "I'm not the type of person I want to be yet, and I need this type of experience to get there."
Kim said he considered studying abroad before the Peace Corps, but realized that studying abroad will not give him the full experience.
"If I'm going to be able to understand people when I'm older, I need more than one cultural background," he said. "I know it's going to be hard work, but I need more discipline now anyway."
Joel White, who served two years as an information technology volunteer in the Republic of Armenia, said the Peace Corps provides an opportunity for personal growth that is hard to explain.
"My advice to anyone who is interested in the Peace Corps is to throw out all your expectations because once you get there, it will be completely different," White, a second-year graduate student from Haven, Kan., said. "You have to go into it with a completely open mind."
Looking back, White said he would definitely do it all again but would have rather waited until after he retired and had a spouse.
Kim and Pellicane said they are prepared for whatever obstacles they must overcome, even those posed by the Peace Corps itself.
"We have been talking about going together, but the Peace Corps said we had to get married to do that," Kim said. "That was a shocker."
