Calling all former Peace Corps and AmeriCorps members.
President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural committee invited you today to march in the Jan. 20 parade down Pennsylvania Avenue after he is sworn in as the 44th president.
It's the latest move to highlight public service and volunteerism in the inaugural festivities. Peace Corps volunteers go to far-flung countries around the world to help locals with education, healthcare, and other needs. AmeriCorps members do community service projects, many in disadvantaged areas in inner cities or in rural America.
Marchers will carry the flags of the countries that Peace Corps have served over the years, while AmeriCorps alumni will include some of the millions of national service volunteers since John F. Kennedy's call to service in his famous 1961 inaugural address, the committee said.
"These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service," Obama said in a statement. "Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade."
