Elizabeth McKee Gore of Friendswood is one of 200 marchers who have been selected by the National Peace Corps Association and the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, D.C, to represent Peace Corps volunteers around the world in the Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Jan.20.
Gore served in Bolivia, South America as an Agricultural volunteer from 2003 to 2005.
“I am excited and honored to march in the Inaugural Parade on behalf of the United States Peace Corps. I hope my family in Texas will be watching so I can make them proud,” said Gore.
A native Houstonian and Texas A&M graduate, Gore is the Executive Director of Global Alliances for the United Nations Foundation. She is also leading the successful Nothing But Nets campaign, a global grassroots effort to send nets and save lives to prevent malaria in Africa. Nothing But Nets will be hosting service projects on Martin Luther King Day in association with the United Methodist Church’s “Be the Change you Want to See” project in honor of the Inauguration.
Gore met and married fellow volunteer James Gore of Healdsburg, California. He is now an international consultant on behalf of the California Wine Industry and is President of the Board for the Return Peace Corps Volunteer of Washington. The couple now lives in Alexandria, VA.
Members of the Peace Corps Community will carry the flags of the 139 countries where nearly 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served during the 48-year history of the agency. Some marchers also will wear elements of the national dress of those host countries.
In announcing the participation of the Peace Corps Community and the AmeriCorps Alums in the parade, President-elect Obama said, “These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service. Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade."
The marchers—who served in 93 countries—will represent every decade of Peace Corps service and include original Peace Corps staff; former volunteers and staff; and currently serving volunteers. Notable marchers will include Senator Harris Wofford, marching with two grandsons, and children and grandchildren of the agency’s charismatic first director, Sargent Shriver.
