Pentagon considering sending medical team to probe drug, health links
Could a series of domestic killings at a North Carolina Army base be linked to an anti-malaria drug taken by soldiers? The Pentagon is considering sending a medical team to Fort Bragg to find out if that's the case. An Army spokeswoman says the team could be sent in the next few weeks. She stresses the team would look into any other behaviorial or physical problems that could be involved. The Army's preferred anti-malaria drug -- Lariam (LA'-ree-uhm) -- carries rare reported side effects, including agitation, depression and aggression. The drug's maker acknowledges reports of suicide and suicidal thoughts linked to Lariam, but a company spokesman says they're extremely rare.

Raleigh, North Carolina-AP -- Could a series of domestic killings at a North Carolina Army base be linked to an anti-malaria drug taken by soldiers?
The Pentagon is considering sending a medical team to Fort Bragg to find out if that's the case.
An Army spokeswoman says the team could be sent in the next few weeks. She stresses the team would look into any other behaviorial or physical problems that could be involved.
The Army's preferred anti-malaria drug -- Lariam (LA'-ree-uhm) -- carries rare reported side effects, including agitation, depression and aggression.
The drug's maker acknowledges reports of suicide and suicidal thoughts linked to Lariam, but a company spokesman says they're extremely rare.
Three of the four Fort Bragg soldiers who allegedly killed their wives this summer were Special Operations troops who had been deployed to Afghanistan -- where the malaria risk is high.
Army officials won't say if the men had taken Lariam. Two of the soldiers killed themselves after killing their wives.
