Subject: ALERT! House Vote Tuesday, July 17, on Giving Coverdell's Name to Peace Corps Headquarters
We have just learned that the House leadership has decided to bring S-360,
to rename the Peace Corps Headquarters, wherever sited, after the late Sen.
Paul Coverdell, to the floor under suspension of the rules as a
non-controversial bill. IF THIS HAPPENS, IT WILL PASS AUTOMATICALLY.
The National Peace Corps Association strongly urges you to call or fax
TODAY Speaker Dennis Hastert, urging that he withdraw the Bill from the House
Schedule, because the bill IS controversial. Fax: 202-225-0697; Phone:
202-225-2976.
I have just faxed a letter to the Speaker, asking him to pull the Bill from
the Schedule and requesting an opportunity to discuss with him and the
House leadership the thinking of RPCVs. You will recall that we wrote to the
Committees and to RPCVs in the Congress, taking the position that the Peace
Corps headquarters should not be named after any single Director because
the heart of the Peace Corps is the Volunteers. We got strong support for this
position from many RPCVs who responded.
Thank you.
