My parents were migrant farm workers who
traveled throughout the Southwest harvesting crops, and I keep a picture
in my office of the shack where we lived in my early years. My grandparents
were born in Mexico. My mom and dad both were born in Texas and settled
in Orange County, where I've been since I was about 6 or 7 years old.
I grew up in an environment of poverty,
lacking a lot of material goods. But what I did have were two very good
parents who insisted that we get a good education, because education was
going to be the way out of poverty for us.
