Venom against Vasquez continued, however, as leaders of a recall effort against
him pledged to move forward, not trusting him to leave as promised.
"He already broke one promise," said recall leader Snow Hume of Fullerton,
referring to Vasquez's promise to rule out new taxes as a bankruptcy solution.
Vasquez supported the unsuccessful June 27 sales-tax increase measure.
"We need a Gaddi-free environment," Hume said.
Vasquez announced in June that he planned to step down at the
end of his term in January 1997. He was incensed when impatient
detractors filed recall papers anyway in July.
