CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Bank of America Carolinas President Edward C. Dolby today announced his retirement after 31 years with the bank. Cathy Bessant, Corporate Marketing executive, succeeds Dolby as president in North Carolina. Both changes are effective Dec. 31, 2001.

Dolby joined the company in 1970 as a credit analyst. He subsequently served in a number of positions, including commercial loan officer, consumer executive, senior loan and credit officer, city executive, region executive and Carolinas Consumer Bank executive.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., in 1966. He served in the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1968. In 1997, Shaw University awarded Dolby the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

"Ed has made extraordinary contributions to this company over the years. We are grateful for those contributions," said Gene Taylor, Consumer and Commercial Banking executive.

Dolby plans to stay in Charlotte with his wife, Dee, and continue his involvement in a variety of civic activities.

Bessant, named Corporate Marketing executive in November, is relocating to Charlotte after having served as Small Business Segment executive and president, Bank of America Florida. She is responsible for the Corporate Marketing organization, which includes Brand & Communications, Customer Analysis & Research, e-Commerce Marketing and Corporate Affairs.

"I am extremely pleased to have someone with Cathy's broad banking knowledge, leadership skills and public service experience serve in this role as North Carolina president," said Taylor.

Prior to her Florida and Small Business roles, Bessant was president of Consumer Real Estate and Community Development Banking, where she was responsible for developing and executing the bank's consumer real estate, mortgage and community development financing strategies.

She also managed the Bank of America Neighborhood Development subsidiaries, including the Bank of America Community Development corporations, the Bank of America Community Development Bank Small Business Investment Corporation and other entities engaged in investing capital into historically underserved markets. Bessant joined the company in 1982 as a Corporate Banking officer. A native of Jackson, Mich., Bessant earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan.
