In proposing to double the size of the Peace Corps to 14,000 volunteers, President Bush seeks to bolster one of the most admired and successful initiatives this country has ever undertaken.
Since 1961, more than 165,000 Americans have served in more than 130 countries as Peace Corps volunteers.
They have taught English and other subjects to foreign students, worked with small farmers to increase harvests, helped communities to develop and improve conditions, taught local people how to monitor their environment, raised community awareness of health issues and engaged in many other activities on a people-to-people level.
Peace Corps volunteers have made many friends for America, and they have returned to help this country have a better understanding of the rest of the world, much of it far different from our own land.
A new emphasis on placing Peace Corps volunteers in Islamic countries is well placed, because clearly the Muslim world needs to address its economic backwardness to give its millions of citizens hope for better lives.
And we Americans also would benefit by learning more about Islamic culture and establishing greater bonds of friendship at the grass- roots.
