NPCA Chairman to consult for US Peace Corps

Read and comment on this exclusive story from Peace Corps Online on NPCA Chairman Dick Pyle and his new position consulting for the US Peace Corps:

NPCA Chairman Dick Pyle to work as Consultant to US Peace Corps

Dick Pyle, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Peace Corps Association, has accepted a consulting position with the United States Peace Corps and will be going to work as a full time consultant to the Office of Special Services in Peace Corps Washington effective March 4.

Dr. Pyle presently resides in Austin, Texas and is active in the "Heart of Texas Peace Corps Association" serving as the representative to the National Peace Corps Association. Dr. Pyle was instrumental in having the Texas Senate designate March 6, 2001 as Peace Corps Day in Texas. The photo above shows him on the right accepting the resolution from Austin Senator Gonzalo Barrientos (on the left) on behalf of the Peace Corps with Rick Weller and Christine Cwik in the center.

Dr. Pyle, along with his wife Betty, served as a PCV in Jamaica (Lucea) from 1966 to 1968, Director of the Peace Corps Training Center in Puerto Rico from 1970-72 and Country Director for the Eastern Caribbean from 1990 to 1993. In the 1980's he developed and directed a short term international service learning program to his Peace Corps village of Lucea in cooperation with the local Jamaican Rotary Club. Over a thousand college students and faculty from six schools of higher education have been involved in this "mini-Peace Corps" project. This program continues today and serves as a model of how PCV's can continue to be involved in the development process with their Peace Corps site.

Dr. Pyle has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Florida and has worked in a variety of positions ranging from Counseling Center Director, Dean of Students and faculty member at colleges in Georgia and Michigan and most recently the Universtiy of Texas at Austin. His B.A. is from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

His job as a consultant to the Peace Corps will be to work in the Office of Special Services. Staff in the office assesses Volunteer support needs and coordinates interventions/procedures relating to PCV crisis including disappearance, evacuation, early termination and death. In addition, the office assists in the design and implementation of in-country training events to assist volunteers to cope more effectively with stress and cross-cultural communication.

Dr. Pyle has been an active NPCA board member since 1996 and will leave the board this June when his term of service ends. He will remain on the board until that time as long as there is no conflict of interest with his working as a consultant to the Peace Corps.

In an interview with Peace Corps Online, Dr. Pyle stated that "I have had a love affair with the Peace Corps since the 1960's and, along with over 162,000 Americans, have been blessed to be part of such a worthy and noble endeavor."
