PROFESSOR'S HOME DOUBLES AS GALLERY

Feb 17, 2002 - Virginian-Pilot Author(s): Stasi Booth Correspondent

NESTLED AWAY IN Portsmouth, Richard Singletary's home is a tribute to African and African-American art. His collection includes the work of contemporary African artist Bruce Onobrakpeya (a painting by Onobrakpeya is shown above) and oil paintings by Thomas Stockett as well as carved African artifacts perching alongside modern local sculpture.

Singletary, who has one of the largest personal collections of African and African-American art in Hampton Roads, as well as other art, is an adjunct professor of art at Norfolk State University. He started collecting while in the Peace Corps in Liberia and recently acquired a large portion of African art and artifacts from the collection of Charles K. Sibley, an artist and retired Old Dominion University professor.

Singletary's collection is open for viewing by appointment. Contact him at 487-7362.
