President Bush has told the Peace Corps to double in size within 5 years and is giving it the budget to grow, but the last time Peace Corps grew this fast, there were serious problems with too rapid expansion. Within the next 6 months the Peace Corps Volunteers will start serving in East Timor and Peru, volunteers will return to the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and Peace Corps assessment teams will be sent to countries like Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Swaziland and Chad to evaluate opportunities for service. Sargent Shriver was on the ticket for Vice President in 1972 and ran in the primaries for President in 1976. RPCV Paul Tsongas made a strong showing against Bill Clinton in the presidential primaries in 1992. Now Chris Dodd is considering a run for the White House.
