WHEN SHOULD THE PEACE CORPS RETURN TO AFGHANISTAN?

President Bush has told Director Vasquez to bring volunteers back into Afghanistan. Last week Vasquez made his first overseas trip for the Peace Corps traveling to Pakistan and Afghanistan and a Peace Corps Press Release said he would meet with Assessment Teams who are conducting programming and security assessments to determine if conditions will support sending in the agency’s Crisis Corps volunteers.

When should Peace Corps Volunteers return to Afghanistan? Read the op-ed piece by a RPCV who says sending PCVs is premature and must be carefully reassessed. Read another op-ed piece by an RPCV who says new Peace Corps volunteers should head first to Afghanistan. Read the statement by NPCA President Dane Smith who says that special care needs to be exercised in increasing volunteers in the Middle East at this time.
