Register now for Advocacy Day and for the NPCA Conference, June 20-23, on the web at www.rpcv.org.

ADVOCACY DAY

Between now and June 20, NPCA Advocacy Day, efforts will focus on mobilizing teams to visit Members of Congress and staff in their offices on Capitol Hill. Teams will be oriented and organized on Wednesday night, June 19. They will visit Congressional offices on Thursday, and be debriefed after their visits. The day will conclude with an expert panel on "Advocacy Every Day," followed by a Congressional reception in the Library of Congress. This is your opportunity to carry forward from your contacts in the district to a shared effort on the Hill.

ADVOCACY DAY ISSUES

This year Advocacy Day will focus entirely on a bigger and better Peace Corps, including not only the proposed doubling in size over the next five years, with a corresponding budget increase, but also an expanded Peace Corps mandate, together with enlarged roles for RPCVs and support of their initiatives. For more on this, see the NPCA website at (mandate) and (issue brief).

The larger issue continues to be responsible foreign policy for an interdependent world, implemented by a proposed doubling of the foreign affairs budget. We recognize that a doubling of the Peace Corps is not likely to be sustained unless the overall budget for international programs rises accordingly.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE

Whether or not you will actually participate in Advocacy Day, you can support the cumulative impact by working with your local partners to meet with (1) your Member of Congress and (2) local media editors, to support our issues.

IF YOU NEED HELP TO GET STARTED

If you don't already have information on how to connect with, or become a leader in, a new local NPCA Advocacy Group, contact NPCA for information. An action checklist is available.

FUTURE ISSUES

Future issues of this newsletter will provide additional information on developments in other NPCA issue areas, including international health, and environment and development. You can join working groups in each of these areas.
