Greetings,

Join an RPCV Work Group to Nicaragua

RPCVs are invited to join a group of 15 RPCVs and friends on a 10-day service trip to Nicaragua through Seeds of Learning (SOL), a Sonoma-based organization that has been promoting educational advancement in rural Nicaragua and El Salvador for 12 years. Each year SOL sends a dozen work groups to Central America to assist communities in the construction of schools, bookshelves and desks and to foster cultural exchanges through projects in rural Learning Resource Centers. In March 2002, I led a SOL work group to Nicaragua comprised of AmeriCorps members taking a break from an environmental restoration program in the Bay Area. The experience far surpassed expectations, and I'm organizing RPCVs and their guests for a July 5th-15th, 2003 work group. About half of the available spaces have been secured (mostly from RPCVs from Russian Far East), and I'm looking to round out the group with other RPCVs. No construction experience is required to participate (Nicaraguan builders will supervise the mixing of cement, laying of bricks and raising of roofs!) and Spanish language skills will afford participants a much richer experience, but are not required. The costs for the program include a $900 program fee (which covers all in-country expenses as well as funding the materials used in the school construction) plus airfare. Some partial scholarships are available for people under 30 years old and the entire cost is tax deductible. For more information about SOL and the range of projects they support, visit www.seedsoflearning.org. To request an information packet or inquire about the July work group, contact Jason Rainey at 707.775.4662 or jrainey@marincc.org. Join us in building solidarity with Nicaraguans, while creating new friendships with RPCVs!
