Dear Fellow RPCVS, I was wondering how we could help out in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Is there an Emergency Relief Corps for here in the US as there has been for foreign disasters? IF not, we should certainly start one for situations as catastrophic as this event. What are the necessary steps to take? I am sure the American Red Cross could use translators for the thousands of Hondurans that called New Orleans home, as well as other immigrants. Also, our knowledge in dealing with no electricity and water, sets us apart from most individuals. I was thinking they probably need kerosene lanterns, a telegram service, and mosquito repellant for starters. What are your ideas on this? Sandra Rogers, Honduras 85-87 |

I'm aching to do something more than send money (I already did that). I've been doing research from NJ. I found a church that is helping evacuees outside Dallas. They are seeking quick help in the form of personal products. Please send toiletries such as soap, toilet paper, shampoo, toothpast & toothbrushes, also wallets & backpacks) to: Sachse First Methodist Church 1520 Blackburn Road Sachse, Texas 75048 Send clothing and shoes to: Good Will Industries 5200 Jensen Drive Houston, Texas 77026 or Red Cross 6725 Seigen Lane Baton Rouge, Louisiana |

Gaddi just announced on 9/7 that the Crisis Corps will be sent to the gulf states. Anyone who is interested in volunteering can call 800424.8500 x2250 or e-mail crisiscorps@peacecorps.gov. I found the announcement on the FEMA website. Kathryn Patrick Thailand 84-86 Group 79 |
