The American presence included more than 30 Peace Corps volunteers in Equatorial Guinea, including six on the island, but political uncertainties led to their departure in 1993. The U.S. ambassador left in 1994 and the United States embassy in Malabo closed in the fall of 1995, the victim of worldwide diplomatic downsizing. Equatorial Guinea is now covered by the United States embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon.
