Biographical Note

Tim McLaurin grew up in Fayetteville, N.C. He graduated from high school and enlisted in the Marines near the end of the Vietnam War. When the war ended, he was discharged and returned to Fayetteville to marry his high school sweetheart and settle down as a Pepsi-Cola salesman. Three years later, he started a traveling reptile show that he took to carnivals and fairs. After one year of life on the road, McLaurin started attending classes at North Carolina State University and then at North Carolina Central University. Eventually, he transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study with Doris Betts and Max Steele and to complete his degree.

In 1989, McLaurin was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer and underwent a successful bone marrow transplant in 1990. He now lives in Chapel Hill, N.C., and teaches writing at Duke University and North Carolina State University.
