The 2002 Peace Corps Writers award for Best Travel Writing has been awarded to Joe Cummings for Lonely Planet Bangkok

Presented annually, the award recognises outstanding writing in fiction; non-fiction and poetry that captures the essence of the Peace Corps experience.

Lonely Planet Bangkok author Joe Cummings lives in Thailand, has a Masters in Thai and art history, and is one of Lonely Planet's better known authors. Cummings has written over 30 guidebooks for Lonely Planet, including the best-selling Thailand and Thailand's Islands & Beaches. He is winner of several major travel writing awards, including the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Award 1995 (for Lonely Planet Thailand) and was a Thomas Cook Guidebook of the Year finalist in 1991 (for Lonely Planet Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia) and 1984 (Lonely Planet Thailand).

The 2002 Peace Corps Writers award was presented at the Opening Ceremony for the National Peace Corps Association Conference in Washington, D.C., on Friday 21 June 2002. Previous winners of the award have included Paul Theroux.
