Kids Helping Kids
Candi Lavender's students at North Forsyth High School have spent the semester learning about the Republic of Moldova. COL Frank Swett, Chief Officer of the U.S. Military Liaison Team has been very helpful with communications between them and their partner school Ion Creanga Liceu in Chisinau. Students were so moved by pictures he sent of orphanages in Moldova they wanted to do something to help the children have Christmas. Students from Mrs. Lavender's World History class prepared a poster display with pictures of the orphanage and collected money during the school lunches. In three days they raised over $500. Some student comments:

Keith Kadlec Peace Corps Volunteer in Moldova
Mrs. Lavender and her students have been corresponding with Keith Kadlec and some of his English language students in Moldova. Keith is a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English in a Romanian language high school in Moldova. While home in Winston-Salem for the Christmas holidays, Keith came to speak to Mrs. Lavender's 9th grade seminar class about Moldova and the Peace Corps. He brought pictures and some items from Moldova to share with the students. Here are some of the students impressions of his talk:
"I thought it was cool when he told us that some of the students in school could speak two or three languages." - Allison C.
"I thought the talk that we had on Tuesday, by the Peace Corps Volunteer was very inspirational. I never knew exactly with the Peace Corps was about and what exactly they did. Everything that people help with all around the world amazes me." - Elizabeth G.
"When the Peace Corps volunteer named Keith came and talked to our class, I knew nothing of Moldova. I learned that it was once part of the U.S.S.R. Most of the people there either speak Russian or Romanian. The schools there (if they are lucky!) only have heat for a few hours a day... Compared to the people and students of Moldova, we are very lucky for all that we have." Carrie H.
