Greetings to all our members, much regards to all volunteers and the sponsors of our events. Of all the tools at our disposal to promote the security of people, none offers greater potential than the one you are using right now. Yet, for all of its promise, this powerful medium has not been used to its fullest. We are only at the beginning of the curve in determining the potential of this new tool.
As we see the explosion of public enterprises, e-commerce and integrated networks that is driving the private sector ahead, we need an equivalent burst to serve the public good - to advance the welfare and safety of individuals. For none is that need greater than for children and women who are put at extreme risk by abuse, drug and conflict every day. In too many places and in too many instances children and women have been forced from their homes, separated from their families, made to act as human shields, stripped of their identities and callously killed children have rarely been so vulnerable. The International Conference is an attempt to address this crisis by putting children first.

Young people will have a voice along with those of us in government and civil society. And that voice will be heard like never before. Our record as an international community has been mixed: often failure to respond in time, with adequate will and with sufficient resources to end the suffering of young people. South Africa will be an important venue to examine why that is and to explore new ways of acting and building the necessary capacity and will so that we do not repeat the failures of the past.

Tomorrow’s international security depends on our efforts today at finding solutions to the cultures of violence and impunity that endanger children's lives and jeopardize their future.

I hope that we come away from this conference having sustained the hope of the many millions who have lost all in conflict that an international community does exist that is willing to hold up the basic dignity of humankind. The legacy of these events will be to have begun to make safe a world of opportunity and promise for all children.

These are enormously important questions to ask at any time, but they are especially important to address in the wake of September 11. The aftermath of that event, on the one hand, revealed to many Americans as never before how many of their fellow citizens (or future citizens) come from religious traditions dramatically at odds with their own. But it also demonstrated that American culture, which has shaped Catholicism and Judaism in distinctly American ways, is shaping Islam (and other religions such as Buddhism) in similar ways. It may not be an exaggeration to say that the way we find answers to the question of common moral values in the face of religious differences is vital to the future security of the Untied States.

To explore these kinds of questions, "Religious Diversity and the Common Good" will meet for six weeks. Each week will contain two three-hour sessions devoted to a specific reading assignment and one two-hour session reserved for synthetic discussion. I will lead each discussion, although, depending on the expertise of the participants, it may make sense to have specific individuals take responsibility for particular texts, especially in the fifth week when individual projects are discussed. Participants will be expected to read the common texts for each particular session. All participants will be expected to reflect on the ways the material discussed during the seminar can help them with their teaching, research, or institutional development; this will generally take place through a written project, but other forms of reflection will be accepted. I will be

Hi, I am a current applicant, and after speaking with my peace corps recruiter, have found out that they would like to nominate me for a math teaching assingnment in Africa. However, I am a math and spanish major, and hope to use spanish somehow later in my professional career. So, I am nervous that accepting such a position and not speaking spanish for 2 years, I will lose alot of what I have gained through my study abroad and studies here. However, I know that this is not an experience that I can so easily cast off because of this fear. I was wondering if anyone was in a similar position and could tell me how it affected them? Thank you so much for any advice from personal experience you can give me!

I met Calvin Musole while traveling in Botswana last August. He wants very much to connect with his PC teacher, Ms. Coronado, from Boston who taught him in 1992-93 at the Matwila Secondary School in Namibia. His email address is <musolecalvin@yahoo.com>
I am an RPCV/Malaysia'67 and told Calvin I would try to help find his teacher, but so far, with no luck.
