R. Barrie Walkley was sworn-in as the United States Ambassador to Guinea on October 12, 2001. He was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1998 - 2001. Ambassador Walkley’s first assignment in the Foreign Service was Yaounde (Cameroon). In addition to assignments at the State Department in Washington, D.C., he has served in Lahore (Pakistan), Pretoria (South Africa), and Islamabad (Pakistan). In 1993, he was seconded to the United Nations and served as Special Advisor to the SRSG for Somalia and as the UN Spokesperson in Mogadishu.
Ambassador Walkley is the recipient of a Presidential Award and the Department of State's Superior Honor Award. He holds degrees from the University of California, UCLA, and USC.
Ambassador Walkley and his wife, Annabelle, have two children who are in the United States. Ambassador and Mrs. Walkley served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Somalia, 1967- 69.
